Chicken ownership: a photo essay

They scratch up all the mulch

They get in the garden

They poop everywhere

They don't keep up their end of the bargain

Object lessons are lost on them

I feel ya! I’ve had my girls for 4 months no eggs. I was supposed to get eggs from a couple of them about a month ago. As for the beautiful hosta in our back yard….gone! House plants on the deck for the summer…destroyed! CHICKENS…

    Thank goodness their entertaining:)

  2. Whisper “cacciatore” to them. Or, alternatively, give it to them straight: “Chicken salad? Or egg salad? Chicken salad? Or egg salad?”

By the way, were you really threatening to eat her in that picture, or just shove a beer can where it had never been before? (It’s Friday, and I’m feeling naughty today.)

  3. Very good LOL

Love the picture of the hen completely oblivious to her fate if she doesn’t put out.

I am howling out loud! You are sooooo funny.

    (Love the new ‘do.)

  6. Brooke S says:

That is hilarious! Sadly, I still want some.

  7. Hysterical. Nuff said.

Oh Wow what a good photo essay! So why do we love them so much? Perhaps because there is an equal part of amusement at their antics which balances the poop, garden predation, and mulch messing. And you get the eggs, sometimes . . .

Thanks for everyone who let me know I got a laugh. It’s a small thing, but it makes my day.

Kate, I LOVE the chicken salad/egg salad bit. My birds are going to be hearing a lot of it. As for the threat, I figure I’ll start with the beer can and only take the more drastic measures if things don’t improve.

Mimi — You’re right about their entertainment value. I can’t tell you how many hours we’ve spent, just watching.

A picture is worth a thousand words! I think I’m skewing your numbers here because I’ve gone back to this so many times and each time found it more delightful.

Did want to say that I love your final haircut – perfect for this incredibly hot/humid summer.

And, the fact that you still cook on a non-mechanical, non-gas grill. Hooray for us!

OMG! I was not expecting that last photo. I laughed my butt off and am sending this to everyone i know. Except my PETA freak vegan daughter….

  12. Greg says:

Love the photo essay! LOL :) My hens did not really get on with laying until after I added some oyster shell flakes to their diet. Prior to that, I saw signs of laying and egg eating, but very few eggs. About 7 to 10 days after they got a calcium boost, eggs started to appear with shells intact! Failing that, I like chicken dinners either way-bone in or boneless!

  13. Fiona says:

So funny – I laughed out loud at the last photo!
